It's easy to feel like a good routine needs ten steps and a shelf full of products. In practice, most skin does very well on a short, consistent routine: cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect. Everything else is optional, and adding more only helps if it's solving a problem you actually have.
Start with a gentle cleanser that doesn't leave your skin feeling tight or squeaky — that tightness is usually a sign it's stripping natural oils rather than just removing dirt and sunscreen. Cleanse once in the evening at minimum; a morning rinse with water alone is often enough if you're not wearing much product overnight.
After cleansing, this is where you address specific concerns — a serum for dullness or uneven tone, a targeted treatment for breakouts, or nothing at all if your skin is behaving well. More isn't better here; introduce one new product at a time so you can tell what's actually working.
Moisturizer locks in hydration and is worth using even if your skin runs oily — oily skin can still be dehydrated, and skipping moisturizer often just triggers more oil production to compensate. Finish every morning routine with sunscreen, rain or shine; it's the single product with the clearest long-term payoff for both sun damage and premature aging.
The best routine is the one you'll actually stick with. If a nightly ritual feels like a chore, trim it down to the essentials and build from there once it's a habit.
